Putting Your Heart First

With the festive celebrations over and the focus on the New Year ahead, Wessex Heartbeat are busy promoting their ‘Your Healthy Heart' initiative to businesses in Southampton. The latest participants were Lloyds Register Marine office based in Town Quay, responsible for assessing and certifying ships, systems and facilities. Thirty three members of staff took part in the initiative aimed at supporting the health of the community throughout the Wessex region.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Sisters from Wessex Heartbeat and Southampton General Hospital offered blood pressure checks, cholesterol testing (both of which are silent killers) blood glucose and body mass index checks.

UKI Marine Occupational Safety and Health Manager, Keith Hulbert said "'We are a caring organisation and like to take interest in our colleagues health, hence we took up the offer of this excellent free health check initiative. Wessex Heartbeat are a great local charity which I wanted to support, they undertake a great deal of valuable work in the community, more organisations should take up this initiative"

"The feedback we received back from the session was very encouraging and as one colleague commented "I tend to be rather undisciplined when it comes to making my own arrangements for health checks, and this results (or can result) in reactionary medical attention instead of preventative checks"

As D'Arcy Myers, CEO of Wessex Heartbeat Charity explains "It is my vision that everyone affected by heart conditions receive the best possible support. If we are able to highlight these risk factors earlier on through running this Healthy Heart initiative, then I would consider that we have made significant progress."
