Wessex Cardiac Centre Surgical Fellow Presents at Special International Meeting

Mr Giedrius Baliulis, a Surgical Fellow, who has been a part of the team at Southampton since 2003, attended a truly special meeting in Guatemala with the support of Wessex Heartbeat.

The joint meeting was between the World Society for Paediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery and multiple societies from around the world in honour of Aldo R Castañeda.  Over the last fifty years Dr Castañeda has played a vital role in the development of neonatal and infant heart surgery.  Many of the leading medics in paediatric cardiac care were at the meeting.

Mr Baliulis gave a presentation on, ‘Sustainable Knowledge Transfer in Paediatric Cardiac Surgery: A Team Approach to Shared Learning’.  The presentation focused on the research done by himself and Wessex Cardiac Centre Surgeon Mr Marcus Haw into Lithuanian paediatric cardiac services. The conclusions from the research show that Southampton is a good teaching centre that achieved positive results and outcomes.

Mr Baliulis’ attendance at the meeting enabled knowledge acquired by the Southampton cardiac team to be shared with medical professionals from around the world and elevated the work of the Wessex Cardiac Centre on the world stage of paediatric cardiac care.
