Young Writers Support Wessex Heartbeat
Beth Jordan, an 11 year old from Hampshire who has undergone three major heart operations, has won a national poetry competition with her poem about her hero - her Wessex Cardiac Centre surgeon.
Beth first had open-heart surgery at Southampton General Hospital when she was just 11 weeks old and has had two more operations since. All three procedures were carried out by Consultant Cardiac Surgeon, Marcus Haw.
The poem, called ‘No One Famous', was chosen as a finalist from 35,000 entries in the Young Writers' Poetry competition, and will be published in a book entitled, Poetry Explorers - Poems From Hampshire.
In the poem, Beth hails Mr Haw as her hero and as someone who, "is always there to listen and always there to care."
Young Writers said, "Young Writers, the publishers of Poetry Explorers - Poems From Hampshire, are proud to support Beth Jordan's chosen charity, Wessex Heartbeat, and have donated £500 to the charity, which represents 10% of the sales from the book her work appears in.
By running annual, nationwide writing competitions, Young Writers has promoted poetry and creative writing within schools for the last 20 years. Poems and stories displaying perception, creativity and imaginative use of language are selected for publication in regional anthologies, giving young writers across the UK and overseas a unique opportunity to see their work in print.
