This Fun Run was started in 1986 by Mike Crossman, a friend of George's to raise cash for the Salisbury based intergrated Spinal Rehabilitation Foundation after George, a Champion British sidecar racer suffered a spinal injury in a motorsport accident in 1985.  Since then, the annual Stockbridge event has attracted hundreds of entrants.

Unfortunately in 1994, Mike Crossman died of Heart Failure, So Mike's son Jeb, who continues to organise the event, added Wessex Heartbeat to the charity list in memory of his father.
