LifeLab was first initiated in 2008 at the University of Southampton. It has continued to develop through the collaboration of researchers from the University's Education School, Faculty of Medicine, MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit and the Mathematics and Science Learning Centre, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust and the NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre. Funding from Wessex Heartbeat in 2016 was instrumental in establishing the on-going delivery of the LifeLab programme to schools across the South Coast.

LifeLab draws on research findings from world-leading groups in Southampton and combines them with evidence from elsewhere to raise teenagers' awareness and interest in the science underpinning health and lifestyle issues that lead to heart disease and associated disorders, and make positive changes to adolescent health-related attitudes and health related behaviours. The partnership between LifeLab and Wessex Heartbeat provides a pathway for Wessex Heartbeat to continue the world-leading support for providing the best quality cardiac care for patients and their families in the Wessex region. The on-going partnership between LifeLab and Wessex Heartbeat enables us to showcase, both regionally and nationally, best practice for working with the local education community to ensure the next generations have the best possible start to their lives, for themselves and for their future families.
