Southampton based insurance broker Gallagher will be going for gold this autumn in a cross-Channel bike ride to raise £5,000 for Wessex Heartbeat.

A team of 10 will set off from their office on September 18 and cycle a staggering 250 miles in three days, bound for the picturesque seaport of La Rochelle on the Bay of Biscay.

“We’re all geared up for this challenge and ready to raise money for this important local charity, whose lifesaving work has touched the lives of several of the team.

- Michael Piper from Gallagher

“Besides being a great opportunity to break away from our desks and get our own hearts pumping, what a way to explore these beautiful coastlines, spurred on by the difference we will make to the work of this inspirational charity as well as our own health and fitness!”

The Gallagher cyclists are: Michael Piper, Clara Jordan, Simon Dixon, Stephen Goulter, David Macaulay, Jason Fox, Kate Jackman, Simon Reeves, Emma Sayers and Paul Chapman.

This isn’t the first time staff from the company have pedalled to France to rack up charitable funds. They smashed a similar challenge to Paris back in 2016, but have increased the distance by another 100 miles this time around.

“We are delighted to have been nominated as Gallagher’s charity for this challenge and applaud their ambition and their commitment to raising such a life-changing amount of money by taking on this gruelling feat."

- John Munro, chief executive of Wessex Heartbeat

“There’s still plenty of time to support the team’s fundraising efforts via their SponsorMe link and we’d like to thank all those who have already dug deep to spur on the cyclists as they gear up for a summer of training.”

Proceeds raised by Gallagher will support the work of the Cardiac Centre at Southampton General Hospital, one of the largest and most reputable in the country. The centre cares for people of all ages, serving 3.5 million people across the South Coast and on the Channel Islands and performing 1,600 operations every year.
