Funding for a Cardiac Youth Worker in support of the patients' psychological needs.
Depression and anxiety are more common among young people with cardiovascular disease and can worsen physical outcomes. Many patients report being unable to access support after a diagnosis.
Heartbeat recognises that amongst patients with congenital heart disease and their families, there is a need to address psychological health and we are delighted that we have started to fund not one , but two Cardiac Youth Workers in support of the patients' psychological needs.
This is a dedicated service within Cardiac supporting young people aged 11-25 years, a time we know for all young people living with a long-term health condition is particularly challenging, especially for those with congenital heart disease.

Meet Becky and Kim
Â
In March 2023, Becky stepped into the role as the first Cardiac PEER Youth Worker and Kim joined us in August 2025. Both of these ladies are a constant line of support and a friendly face for the children and young adults as they go through their cardiac journey. Being a heart patient can create enough anxiety and worry for anybody, no matter what age. Growing up with a heart condition can be much harder for the patient, as they also have to contend with the day-to-day trials and tribulations of adolescence.
Another Key part of the role is transitioning patients from paediatrics to adults. This is a vital service where Becky and Kim can offer an hour appointment for a young person where they can discuss all things to do with the transition. This can range from understanding the technical terms about their condition, what to do in an emergency, how to look after themselves, and give important advice when it comes to recreational activities and skills. This is particularly important when some of our young people are facing end of life care. It is crucial for them to feel seen, understand what they are going through, and be in full control of any decision that they need to make.

DID YOU KNOW?
Heartbeat are now funding activities designed to bring young cardiac patients together, helping them connect with others who share similar experiences, enjoy the activities they love (with tailored support), and simply feel like kids again.
With your help and generosity, we can continue to keep empowering these young people to grow, build confidence, and embrace life through fun, meaningful experiences.
