A team of seven have raised over £13,000 for Southampton cardiac charity Heartbeat in a 24 hour golf challenge.
Jamie Driver, Matt Driver, Andy Bonnon, Harvey Spencer, Dan Warren, Sam Davies and Alex Ind walked 60km, took approximately 90,000 steps and completed six rounds of golf all in the space of a single day, starting at 7pm on 26th June and ending at 7pm on 27th June.
Altogether, the team raised over £13,000, with Jamie’s employer, Barratt David Wilson Homes Southampton Division, match-funding a further £1,000 to the pot.
Funds raised will go towards Heartbeat’s renovation of its D2 Ward at University Hospital Southampton – a project which could see the ward become the biggest heart failure unit in the UK.
For team member Alex Ind, the challenge was deeply personal. Born with a congenital heart condition, Alex, 26, has been a cardiac patient since birth having, amongst other things, endured four major open heart surgeries to correct some serious heart defects. Both he and his family have received invaluable support from Heartbeat whilst he received care in the renowned Wessex Cardiac Unit in the hospital.
Jamie commented: “It’s a pleasure to join Alex in giving back to a charity that does so much to deliver the very best of care to cardiac patients and their loved ones – often at an incredibly challenging time. Everyone put in a fantastic effort on the day and the final total is something we’re all so very proud of.”
CEO of Heartbeat Mark Ind, who is also Alex’s father, said: “It’s wonderful to see Jamie, Matt, Andy, Harvey, Dan, Sam and Alex clubbing together in aid of Heartbeat. We’re immensely grateful for the team’s hard work to raise a remarkable amount that will make a huge difference.
“Having been with them during much of the challenge, I know there were some tough moments but friendship and passion got them through it. Seeing them all come down the eighteenth hole just before 7pm on the Friday was both very inspiring and incredibly emotional – they truly are the ‘Magnificent Seven’.”
