Latest update on what's been happening with our Heart Failure Psychological Therapist, Rebecca Budge

One of the most significant developments within the service this year has been the introduction of our monthly Cardiac Information Session, created specifically to support patients who have recently been diagnosed with heart failure. Receiving a heart failure diagnosis can be an overwhelming and uncertain time, and these sessions aim to provide patients with the knowledge, reassurance, and support they need during the early stages of their journey.
Held once a month, the sessions offer patients the opportunity to meet with healthcare professionals and learn more about their condition in a supportive and informal environment. Topics covered include understanding heart failure and how it develops, the role of the Heart Failure Service and the support available, making sustainable lifestyle changes, returning to physical activity safely, and recognising the emotional impact that can often accompany a diagnosis. The sessions also address common challenges such as anxiety, low mood, and coping strategies, while signposting patients to charities and external organisations that can provide additional practical and emotional support.
The feedback received so far has been extremely encouraging, with many patients saying they feel more informed, confident, and supported by their NHS team. Prior to the introduction of these sessions, patients often experienced a period of uncertainty between receiving their diagnosis and their first detailed discussion with a healthcare professional. The Cardiac Information Session helps bridge that gap, ensuring patients have access to reliable information, expert guidance, and the opportunity to ask questions from the outset.
By providing early education and support, the sessions are empowering patients to take a more active role in managing their condition, helping them feel better equipped to navigate life with heart failure and improving their overall experience of care.
